Where to Stay by Destination

Phnom Penh

Riverside (convenient for the Royal Palace, museums and evening strolls), BKK1 (cafés, restaurants, expat-friendly), and areas near the Central or Russian Markets. Options range from luxury and boutique to solid mid-range and budget.

Siem Reap

The widest choice in the country. Stay near Pub Street / Old Market for nightlife and convenience, or choose quieter boutique hotels and resorts a short tuk-tuk ride away. Many properties arrange temple transport.

Sihanoukville & Islands

Mainland options around Otres and other beaches; island resorts and bungalows on Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem. Book island accommodation in advance during high season.

Kampot & Kep

Riverside guesthouses and boutique hotels in Kampot; seaside resorts and smaller properties in Kep. Excellent for a relaxed few days.

Battambang

Colonial-style hotels and comfortable guesthouses in the atmospheric town centre.

Mondulkiri & Ratanakiri

Eco-lodges and simple guesthouses in Sen Monorom and Banlung — ideal bases for nature and ethical wildlife experiences.

Other provinces

Kratie, Kampong Cham, Preah Vihear area and smaller towns mainly offer guesthouses and basic-to-mid-range hotels. Community homestays exist in selected locations.

Practical Tips

  • Book ahead for peak season (November–March), public holidays and weekends on the islands.
  • Air-conditioning is widely available and recommended in the hot months.
  • Many hotels can arrange reliable tuk-tuks, private drivers and tour bookings.
  • Check recent reviews for cleanliness, noise and service. Location often matters more than star rating for overall experience.
  • Homestays and community lodging support local livelihoods — book through reputable programmes.
  • Licensed establishments should hold the relevant tourism licence from the Ministry of Tourism.
