Stargazing

Dark skies in the highlands, coast and countryside

Cambodia is not yet a formal astronomy-tourism destination, but away from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap the night sky can be remarkably dark. Highlands, remote coast and rural provinces offer excellent conditions for stargazing — especially in the dry season.

Best regions for dark skies

Mondulkiri & Ratanakiri

Higher elevation, low population density and less light pollution. Eco-lodges and campsites can arrange night-sky viewing; combine with daytime waterfalls and nature.

Koh Kong & Cardamoms

Remote coastline and jungle lodges with minimal artificial light. Clear nights reveal the Milky Way over the Gulf of Thailand.

Rural temple countryside

Areas around Preah Vihear, remote Angkor sites at night (where permitted) and quiet provinces offer open horizons and dark skies.

Islands

Koh Rong and quieter islands have limited lighting outside main beaches — walk away from bars and the sky improves dramatically.

Tips
  • Dry season (November–April) means clearer skies and less cloud.
  • New moon periods are best for Milky Way viewing.
  • Bring a red torch to preserve night vision; a simple star app helps identification.
  • Stargazing fits naturally into nature and highland itineraries.
