Mekong, Tonle Sap, coast and freshwater fishing experiences
Cambodia offers a mix of freshwater and coastal fishing — from traditional Mekong and Tonle Sap techniques to sport fishing off the southern coast. Angling here is still relatively low-key compared with neighbouring countries, which means quieter water and authentic local experiences.
The Mekong around Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham, Kratie and Stung Treng supports local fishing communities. Visitors can join short boat-based fishing trips or learn traditional methods. Kratie is also known for Irrawaddy dolphin watching — combine both for a full river day.
Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake is central to Cambodia’s fishing culture. Floating villages live from the lake’s seasonal abundance. Organised trips focus more on culture than sport fishing, but local guides can arrange simple line fishing experiences.
Around Sihanoukville, Koh Rong, Koh Kong and Kep, small boats can be chartered for inshore fishing. Expect mixed reef and pelagic species depending on season and location. Best arranged through local operators or your hotel.
Some rural guesthouses and community tourism projects offer pond or canal fishing as a relaxed activity alongside village stays.
