About Sihanoukville Port & Shore Time

Sihanoukville (officially Preah Sihanouk) is Cambodia’s principal deep-water port on the Gulf of Thailand. Cruise ships usually berth at the Old Jetty Quay inside the commercial port area. From the pier it is a short transfer into the town centre, the main beaches (Occheuteal, Serendipity, Otres) and the ferry terminals for the nearby islands.

Most cruise calls are day visits: ships typically arrive in the morning and depart in the late afternoon or evening. This gives passengers several hours for independent exploration or organised shore excursions. The port is relatively compact, so even a short stay allows time for beaches, a local market visit, or a quick trip toward Ream National Park or the island ferries.

  • Berth: Old Jetty Quay (main passenger berth used by most cruise lines).
  • Visa: e-Visa is not accepted for cruise-ship / seaport arrivals. Visa on Arrival is required and is frequently arranged by the cruise line (fee is often higher than the standard land/airport rate). See the Cambodia Borders page for full requirements.
  • Currency: US dollars are widely accepted alongside the Cambodian riel. ATMs are available in town.
  • Language: Khmer is the national language; English is spoken in tourist areas and by many drivers and guides.

What to See & Do on a Shore Excursion

  • Beaches – Occheuteal, Serendipity and the quieter Otres Beach for swimming and seafood.
  • Koh Rong & Koh Rong Sanloem – Fast ferries from the passenger pier; ideal for a half-day island escape if your ship’s schedule allows.
  • Local markets – Fresh produce, seafood and everyday Cambodian life in the town centre.
  • Ream National Park – Mangroves, trails and coastal scenery a short drive from the port.
  • Wat Leu & Wat Krom – Hilltop and town temples with views over the bay.
  • Seafood lunch – Fresh crab, prawns and fish at beachside restaurants.
  • Independence Beach & Sokha area – More resort-oriented stretches of coastline.
  • City orientation – A short drive through the modern and older parts of Sihanoukville gives a sense of the port city’s rapid development.

Cars, Taxis & Private Tours for Cruise Passengers

Because shore time is limited, many cruise visitors prefer a private car or pre-arranged taxi so they can maximise their time ashore without waiting for shared transport. Private vehicles with English-speaking drivers are available for:

  • Port meet-and-greet and return transfers
  • Half-day or full-day city and beach tours
  • Island ferry drop-off and pick-up
  • Custom itineraries (temples, markets, national park, seafood stops)

Cheap Taxi Cambodia

Private cars, taxis and custom tours in Sihanoukville and across Cambodia. Suitable for cruise passengers who want a reliable driver waiting at the port or a flexible day tour.

Or contact us via WhatsApp for assistance arranging a car for your ship’s call: +855 9875 6688

We recommend booking in advance, especially on days when larger ships (e.g. Sapphire Princess, ms Westerdam) are in port, so a vehicle is ready when you clear immigration.

Tips for a smooth cruise call

  • Confirm with your cruise line whether visa processing is handled onboard or at the pier, and what the exact fee will be.
  • Carry clean US-dollar notes for taxis, small purchases and tips.
  • If you plan to visit the islands, check ferry schedules against your ship’s all-aboard time — return ferries can be limited in the late afternoon.
  • Heat and humidity are high; bring water, sun protection and comfortable walking shoes.
  • For the latest ship schedule and port information, re-check closer to your travel date, as itineraries can change.
