Temples & Ancient Sites

Experiences, tips and practical advice for your Cambodia journey

Cambodia is home to some of the world’s most extraordinary temple complexes. From the iconic silhouette of Angkor Wat to remote jungle ruins and pre-Angkorian brick sanctuaries, the country’s ancient sites offer a profound journey through Khmer history, art and spirituality.

Major Sites

  • Angkor Wat – The largest religious monument on Earth. Best at sunrise or late afternoon. Allow 2–4 hours.
  • Angkor Thom & Bayon – The walled city and the temple of 216 smiling faces.
  • Ta Prohm – Atmospheric ruins with massive trees growing through the stones.
  • Banteay Srei – Exquisite pink-sandstone carvings, often called the “jewel of Khmer art”.
  • Preah Vihear – Dramatic clifftop UNESCO temple with sweeping views.
  • Koh Ker – Remote pyramid temple and surrounding ruins.
  • Sambor Prei Kuk – Pre-Angkorian brick temples in a forest setting (UNESCO).
  • Many other temples within the Angkor Archaeological Park and across the country.

Practical Tips

Buy official Angkor tickets. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). Hire a knowledgeable guide for deeper understanding. Sunrise visits are popular — arrive early. Combine major temples with quieter ones for a richer experience.

Best Time

Dry season (November–April) offers the most comfortable weather. Early morning and late afternoon provide the best light and fewer crowds at popular sites.
